Variação ao Soneto XVIII

Infindo espaço, irmão da noite universal,

Vazio e trevas em um só mistério une;

As estrelas nautas, no seu lume vestal

Mistério igual flutua ao pensamento imune;

O rio do tempo na vida se revela;

De seu próprio nada o silêncio se esvazia;

Labirinto, o pensar se aflige em sua cela:

Perdido o fio, e a razão se desfaz vazia.

Ao pensar nisso, acolhe-me a deserta nau:

Vazio de saber, o ideador se aquieta,

E acima do idear ergue a mão objetal;

Ao fitá-la alheio ao pensar o olhar se queda:

     O espanto do meu espanto afinal penetra

     A vastidão universal, erma e quieta.

          

Soneto XVIII

Indefinite space, which, by co-substance night,

In one black mystery two void mysteries blends;

The stray stars, whose innumerable light

Repeats one mystery till conjecture ends;

The stream of time, known by birth-bursting bubbles;

The gulf of silence, empty even of nought;

Thought's high-walled maze, which the outed owner troubles

Because the string's lost and the plan forgot:

When I think on this and that here I stand,

The thinker of these thoughts, emptily wise,

Holding up to my thinking my thing-hand

And looking at it with thought-alien eyes,

     The wonder of my wonder looketh past

     The universal darkness lone and vast.
